Port-fect Access

June 12, 2024

Rise and shine! We were up and at 'em by 6:00 am, ready to tackle the day. Our mission? Get Dylan's port installed to make IVs a breeze. The hour-long drive from Sedona to Flagstaff was breathtaking through the mountains and flew by. We arrived at Comprehensive Integrated Care before the staff even had their morning coffee!
After filling out the paperwork, they gave him his hopefully last IV and put him in a gown and cute hair cover. We all chatted with nurse and then the doctor about the procedure and then at 8:30am, they wheeled Dylan away for his procedure. We waited anxiously, and within an hour, he was back in the recovery room, looking a bit dazed but relieved. Dylan's heart rate was a bit elevated (160bpm), but a drink and some snacks did the trick to get it down (to 115bpm).

Next stop: a drink break to recharge and hydrate. We loaded up on green tea and made a quick pit stop at Walmart for a seatbelt cover so the seatbelt didn’t rub his incisions and a Lego set.

Back in Sedona by 12:30 pm, we grabbed lunch and headed to the medical yurt for a quick check-up with the doctor. The verdict? THC instead of opioids for pain management. Who knew?

The afternoon was a whirlwind of errands: Walgreens for N95 masks and lidocaine, lunch for Ethan, and a quick RV drop-off. We even squeezed in a trip to another Walmart for some comfy "wife beaters" to make the IV’s easier to administer and so to not rub the incisions. And, drumroll please... our second-ever trip to a dispensary! (The first was for my 91-year-old mother-in-law, and now, for my kid!)

Dylan reported that the THC gummy did wonders for his discomfort, and we wrapped up the day with a hearty dinner and some juice. By 7:00 pm, he was ready for a well-deserved rest, with one more gummy for good measure.

It was a long, eventful day, but we're grateful for the progress and a good night's sleep.
